I can't comment on what usage of LanSweeper or ZCM would look like, but as a Microsoft employee the 10,000ft view of SCCM is that it is lifecycle management. We chose LANDesk because it had strengths of SCCM and ZCM plus their server requirements fit our environment more. Our WSUS IIS server had an error causing WSUS to fail which manifested in SCCM saying WSUS could not send update data to the distribution points / end systems. Biggest thing with SCCM is you need to be very solid on ALL Microsoft products. There are lots of 3rd party addons that can improve quality of life in the console. Overall, felt SCCM to be a bit spartan compared to ZCM but way more reliable. We have 2 datacenters and a colo but no servers at each building (~100 buildings) so that means in theory we needed up to 20 distribution points. Microsoft recommends 4000 computers per distribution point so ideally you put a distribution point at each physical location. Tested on 250 computers (one of our smaller sites). That means when the user needs to run a package that requires administrative rights, the ZCM agent creates a system level task that had to copy 1.2 gigs of data. We have an image with AutoDesk Suite on it which ballooned the default user profile to around 1.2 gigs. Now that I'm thinking about it, another really poor design choice for ZCM is that when you set a bundle to run as administrator, the agent creates a new dynamic administrator user every time a computer reboots. And lots of Object Reference Not Found Errors. During peak network traffic, package downloads corrupted on systems causing package installs to fail horribly. The biggest weakness of ZCM for us was the fact that file transfers were done through UDP. Our ZCM environment is split into 2 logical zones that did not share data or control until 11.3.x but it was still pretty bad to be honest. ZCM had a max device limit per logical zone of 50,000 at 11.2.x but I believe 11.3.x and 11.4.x has a max device of I think 100k. Current 80,000 device ZCM 11.3.2 environment, tested SCCM and LANDesk and about to migrate to LANDesk. ![]()
